Singapore F1 Night Race Set For Historic Debut

15/01/08 - bernama.com.my

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 15 (Bernama) -- The Singapore Formula One Grand Prix, the first time in the history of formula one racing that a race is conducted at night, is slated to debut from Sept 26-28.

It will be held on a street circuit of public roads around the Marina Bay area, situated in the heart of Singapore's city centre.

Billed by many as one of the most dramatic and atmospheric races on the calendar, the proposed 5.067km long street circuit offers multiple overtaking opportunities, as well as fast and challenging turns.

Race organiser, Singapore GP Pte Ltd deputy chairman Colin Syn, told reporters today:"Apart from being the first night race, the Singapore F1 will also be the first street race in Asia.

"It is one of three races in the 2008 F1 calendar to run anti-clockwise, the others being the GP of Brazil and Turkey.

"The qualifying sessions and actual race have been scheduled to begin at 8pm, and our installation of state-of-the-art lighting system will deliver optimal visibility using 3000-lux level lights with overall luminosity that exceeds four times the brightness of a sports stadium.

"This will provide a daylight ambience for drivers and spectators."

He said the circuit was set against the backdrop of downtown Singapore which would provide drivers and spectators alike, a glimpse of the exotic garden city since the circuit winds past an intriguing blend of historic landmarks such as the City Hall and modern-day buildings such as the iconic Esplanade.

Syn said a new 1.2km road which forms the eastern section of the circuit would also be constructed alongside the pit building, adding that work on the building was scheduled to be completed by end of May.

The Singapore race will also score another first as the circuit includes the crossing of a cast-iron bridge (Anderson Bridge) during the race.

Since it would be a street race like the Monaco GP, Syn said safety aspects would be given top priority to eliminate untoward incidents.

"The circuit will comprise 14 left-turns and 10-right turns, and will be run over 61 laps. Our initial target is to draw at least, an 80,000 paying crowd for the race," he added.

The Formula One season kicks off with the Australian GP in Melbourne on March 14, while the Petronas Malaysian GP will follow suit in Sepang on March 21.
