Qatar’s F1 dream can be a reality: Sir Jackie

09/04/08 - By N.D. Prashant - gulf-times.com

HOSTING Formula One night races should not be a problem for Qatar, driving legend Sir Jackie Stewart has said. The ‘The flying Scot’, paid a swift visit to Qatar with his family on his way home from the Bahrain Grand Prix and did not rule out Qatar’s chances of being a Formula One destination in the future.

“Yes, why not, Qatar can host a Formula One race but it all depends on the success of the first night race at the Singapore Grand Prix later this year,” said Stewart on the sidelines of a celebrity dinner held at the Ramada Hotel on Monday.

Although it was his first visit to Qatar, Stewart revealed he was glued to the television last month watching the historic night MotoGP race held in Doha.

“Of course I saw the race and the good thing was everything went fine here. It was really good to see everything fall into place,” said Stewart.

“However, it will be interesting to see if we can attain the same result in Formula One as well, especially in Singapore where it can rain. If it rains, it will be a test for the drivers and the organisers. We have to wait and see how it goes out there.”

Next year Abu Dhabi will become the second Formula One venue in the region after Bahrain and it will be tough for Qatar to get a slot. However, Stewart feels that shouldn’t go against Qatar.

“I don’t think it should be a problem. What we are talking here is night racing and that’s a completely different concept. But as I said earlier it all depends how things unfold in Singapore,” asserted Stewart, who happily autographed his autobiography ‘Jackie Stewart - Winning is not enough’ for the guests and answered their queries with a tinge of humour.
True to the title of his autobiography, he insisted that it’s important for sportsmen to keep winning consistently.

“Ferrari’s Felipe Massa is the winner at Bahrain this time round but there is a race to follow in two weeks’ time. Past is history, people will forget that soon if he doesn’t succeed in the next race,” said Stewart.

“You have to be a serial winner to attain greatness. Mohamed Ali, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, to name a few, have that quality. You should know how to avoid the dip and so I will say ‘winning is not enough’ as there is always someone trying to be better than you,” says Stewart, winner of three Formula One World Championships (1969, 1971, 1973).

The evening couldn’t have ended without his views on the sex scandal involving FIA president Max Mosely.

“Nobody would have allowed a person who has brought the sport a bad name to carry on. I would say he should have stepped down by now in the interest of the sport.

“It is time to put the house in order and the earlier that is done, the better.”
