No decision yet on Sepang night race

19/03/08 - itv-f1.com

Malaysian Grand Prix organisers have denied that they have already decided to hold next year’s race at night – insisting they will hold talks with F1 personnel this weekend before making a decision.

The Sepang circuit admitted earlier this year it was keen to hold its 2009 event under floodlights and has since been in discussions over purchasing a bespoke lighting system.

The Sepang circuit admitted earlier this year it was keen to hold its 2009 event under floodlights and has since been in discussions over purchasing a bespoke lighting system.

However in the lead up to this weekend’s race, Sepang general manager Datuk Azmi Murad says no final decision has yet been made and that it will consult teams and drivers on the matter in the forthcoming days.

"Right now, it is only an option,” he told Malaysia’s New Straits Times newspaper.

“Nothing is finalised yet.

“We're still gathering input and we should also include the drivers and teams in Formula 1 and MotoGP before we can do a proper evaluation.”

"It isn't only about whether to do or not to do it, it is also about how we want to do it and what sort of lighting, where we should locate the lighting and so on."

Sepang officials have already decided that should it following in Singapore’s footsteps and hold a night race; it will secure a permanent floodlighting system at the circuit.

Azmi says there are still a lot of discussions to hold before any night race is given the go-ahead.

"We have to consult the industry as well as the players and find the right specifications before we come to a decision,” he said.

"The decision will also be based on whether it is viable economically.

"The governing bodies – the International Automobile Federation (FIA) and International Motorcycling Federation (FIM) – also have to be consulted."
