Malaysia to join night time F1 revolution

24/03/08 - by Staff - tsn.ca

Bernie Ecclestone says Malaysia will convert its Formula One race to a night event starting next year and he indicated that future races in Southeast Asia will follow suit.

With Singapore set to become the first F1 night race, Ecclestone has been putting pressure on countries such as China, Malaysia and Australia to join the night time revolution.

"We'll speak to the people in China, see what we can do there," Ecclestone tells the Bloomberg news service. "Obviously when we race in South Korea (from 2010), it will be good to have a night race."

Malaysian officials, who previously said they were undecided about a night race, were visited by the lighting team responsible for setting up the Singapore race. Among the benefits of staging a race at night is the cooler temperatures for the drivers and spectators. This past weekend's Malaysian Grand Prix saw temperatures soar to beyond 100-degrees.

Australian officials appear to be the lone holdouts in the switch to a night race. Organizers there have said they would consider moving the start time of the race to late afternoon but stopped short of committing to a night race.

Ecclestone has threatened to take the race away from Melbourne once the contract expires in 2010.

"There's no kids involved so we haven't got a big problem," he tells Bloomberg. "We wouldn't renew our contract."

Ecclestone is set to meet with Australian officials next month.
