F1: 2008 Singapore - Formula 1 road works to complete

16/04/08 - f1sa.com

Inaugural Formula One night race circuit in the final lap :

1. The Land Transport Authority, one of the key agencies involved in preparations for the 2008 FORMULA 1™ SingTel Singapore Grand Prix in September this year, is in the final phase of road works to complete the necessary race track infrastructural works.

2. From April onwards, LTA will be starting the road resurfacing works required for the F1 track. Road resurfacing works which are expected to complete by June 2008 will be conducted between 12am and 6am.

3. To meet FiA strict requirement on surface finishing, the entire width of the track, which ranges between 9 and 15m wide, is required to be resurfaced at the same time. This is unlike the normal road resurfacing work where only one lane needs to be closed at a time. At certain stretches of the street circuit, a full road closure may be required during the works to achieve this.

4. A stronger road asphalt surface which uses a Polymer Modified Binder (PMB) that is able to withstand the high shear forces exerted by the race cars during the F1 race will be used for the resurfacing works. This road asphalt surface will also be able to meet the requirements of daily traffic. Please refer to Annex A for more details on the road asphalt surface.

5. To minimise impact to the traffic flow as well as disruption to the establishments in the vicinity, especially during the weekends, resurfacing works will only take place between Sundays and Thursdays nights.

6. When the works are ongoing, provisions will be made to ensure that motorists will continue to have alternative access. Directional signs will also be placed at strategic locations to guide motorists during road closures. Auxillary Police and Traffic Marshals will also be stationed near the closure site to direct motorists and pedestrians.

Progress update on road construction work for the Formula One circuit;

7. To meet the tight timeframe required to make the F1 race in Singapore possible, the LTA has been stepping up the pace of the construction works of the F1 circuit.

8. The LTA has completed most of the modification works to the existing roads, such as the removal of traffic islands along the track, which started in September last year.

9. The works to widen the promenade fronting the seating gallery and the construction of a new track section above the Stamford Canal are also in the advanced stage of completion.

10. The construction of a new track section in front of the pit building and the construction of a service road and tunnel to the pit building are in progress and on track for completion by end-May 2008.

11. “As we gear up to the Singapore F1 race in September, we are pleased that the necessary infrastructural works are progressing well ahead of schedule. As far as possible, we will strive to minimise the impact that the road works will have on motorists and members of the public, while ensuring the track will be completed in good time for handing over to the F1 race organisers, and meeting the stringent standards required for the F1 race,” said LTA Chief Executive, Mr Yam Ah Mee.
