Australian Grand Prix on the skids

10/03/08 - ninemsn.com.au

Australian Grand Prix organisers have prepared a compromise plan to save the Melbourne race as it faces pressure to be run at night.

Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone has reportedly threatened Australia with expulsion from the championships after a clash with Prime Minister Kevin Rudd over transforming the season-opening race into a floodlit event to satisfy demands for European media coverage.

"The only way the race could stay in Melbourne, or anywhere else in Australia, is if it is staged during the night so that the public in Europe can watch it," Ecclestone reportedly told Britain's The Mail On Sunday.

"At the moment, it is ridiculous that people are asked not to sleep in order to see it live. That can't carry on."

The Victorian government says it has ruled out a night race, which leaves little hope for organisers to save the Australian event.

But Australian Grand Prix Corporation chairman Ron Walker says the corporation would soon reveal plans of a compromise.

"We'll make a press statement this afternoon about a compromise," Mr Walker said.

The Australian Grand Prix moved from Adelaide to Melbourne in 1995 and is believed to have three years left on its contract.

The inaugural Singapore event this September will become F1's first night-time race.
