Anti-clockwise street circuit for F1`s first night race

28/04/08 zeenews.com

Singapore, April 28: The world`s first Formula One night race here in September will be held on an anti-clockwise street circuit of public roads around the famous Marina Bay area.

The race, which is one of the three races in the 2008 Formula One calendar to run anti-clockwise, is not only the first night race but also the first of Asia`s Formula One street races

In September last year, Singapore received in-principle approval from the federation Internationaole De L`automobile (FIA) for the proposed 5.067 km long street circuit, which passes historic landmarks such as the city hall and modern buildings such as the esplanade along the Marina Bay.

The practice race sessions along the track will commence from September 26 and the qualifying session will be on September 27.

The main 2008 Formula One Singtel Singapore Grand Prix will be held on September 28 and there will be an estimated 90,000 spectators.

The cars racing through 61 laps around the anti-clockwise circuit with 14 left turns and 10 right turns, will pass six slowest corners in each lap, during which the racers are estimated to drive between 80 to 100 kph.

The track also offers three turns where the drivers will get overtaking opportunities. The maximum speed a driver can zoom across the circuit will be in excess of 300 kph.

To meet the demands of a street race, the land transport authority here is working on modifications to some existing infrastructure.

The surface of the track will be laid with polymer modified binder and will offer vehicles 20% more grip.

Also, the new 1.2 km road that forms the start and finish straight will be constructed alongside the pit building, which is scheduled to be completed by May end.

State-of-the-art lighting system along the circuit will deliver optimal visibility for the night race conditions, which will be four times brighter than a sports stadium.

Apart from the 2008 Formula 1 Singtel Singapore Grand Prix, there will be three support races, namely the Aston Martin Asia Cup, the formula BMW Pacific and the Porche Carrera Cup Asia.
