The calendar for the
2008 Formula One World Championship has been published by the
FIA, with grands prix in Valencia and Singapore both added as
expected.
However, both races are also
marked as being provisional, with the street circuit layouts
first needing approval.
If approved, Valencia will host
the European Grand Prix on August 24th 2008, while Singapore's
grand prix, scheduled for September 28th, could be F1's first
night race.
The season will open as usual
with the Australian Grand Prix on March 16th, despite race
organisers saying earlier this in the week that Bahrain would
host the first race.
Turkey's race has been moved
from late August to May 11th, while the U-turn decision taken by
F1 commercial rights controller Bernie Ecclestone sees
France confirmed on the calendar.
Ecclestone had said that the
2007 French GP would be the last at Magny-Cours, but
back-tracked following a meeting with French Prime Minister
Francois Fillon.
The French motorsport federation
(FFSA) has a contract until 2011. However, with Ecclestone
ultimately wanting a grand prix in or near Paris, they must now
make efforts to find a new venue.
The Canadian Grand Prix is also
marked as provisional because of its link in recent years with
the United States Grand Prix.
The races have taken place on
back-to-back weekends. However the latter is missing from the
2008 calendar.
The calendar contains 18 races -
one more than this season - with the final grand prix being held
in Brazil on November 2.
