Malaysia to follow Singapore lead and to hold a night race?   The organisers of the Malaysian GP are hoping to stage a night time race in the next few years.   The Sepang International Circuit, which will host the second round of this year's championship on April 10, first got a slot on the calendar back in 1999.   At the time it was well regarded, but since then its popularity has declined and the once state-of-the-art facilities now look somewhat shabby.   Indeed it is now overshadowed by the Singapore Grand Prix and last year the event attracted just 97,000 people over the three-days, well down on the record crowd of 140,000 from 2006 and the 126,000 from 2009, even though the tickets are the cheapest on the F1 schedule. “It has lost its lustre," Sepang International Circuit chief executive Razlan Razali said in an interview with AFP this week. “Having Singapore next to us for F1 does not help and our biggest competitor is the television as many people prefer to watch the race from the comfort of their homes. “[Also] when it rains, it [the main grandstand] leaks. People are not happy. The circuit was built in a record time but unfortunately there were shortcuts and poor maintenance. “We should do one night race before we extend the 2015 contract [with FOM]. Maybe this will attract a bigger crowd as the weather at night will be cool [too],” Razali summed-up. back to Home Related news
